Boat fishing can mean anything from predator fishing from a boat on a lake or broad, right through to sea fishing from a boat. The former would use rods similar to those used on the bank for predator fishing, the latter would use a set of rods that have been designed with sea fishing in mind. Boat rods are often split into two categories: uptide and boat rods.

Uptide rods are, as the name suggests, used when casting a bait uptide from an anchored boat. These were originally cut down beachcasters, and the basic design hasn’t changed much over the years. These rods tend to be 9 or 10 ft in length, long enough to allow you to cast your bait away from the boat. It will usually be softer than the standard beachcaster, too, to allow the rod to allow the rod to move with the tide without tripping the wire leads.

Boat rods are for all round boat fishing were casting isn’t necessary – for example when you’re fishing down tide, wrecking, drifting, and so on. These rods are shorter than their uptide cousins, as casting doesn’t come into play, and tend to be around 6 to 8ft in length. The materials used in these rods tend to be medium to fast action, and are usually a mixture of carbon and glass fibre, although as the popularity of braided lines grows, increasingly rods are being produced with softer tips to cope with the lack of stretch in the line. Most of these rods are ringed for a multiplier reel, but fixed spool reels can also be used as you don’t have to worry about casting.
