The first thing you’ll notice about this reel is its Magnumlite (MGL) Spool. This MGL Spool is unique in its design and it has been constructed to significantly reduce the moment of inertia. The result of this is that your casting distance can see an improvement of up to 20%, giving you the extra distance that you require when you need it. It also helps to improve accuracy with a wide variety of lures, so you can enjoy complete versatility at the water’s edge. What’s more, the MGL actually aids the feel of the handle, enhancing its lightweight and smooth turning properties.
This top end spool is only the beginning of the technologies featured on the Shimano Metanium MGL Reel. The main body of the reel has been manufactured from Hagane. This is a highly rigid metal which ensures that the integral internal components of the reel are held in the perfect position throughout your cast and retrieve – providing you with maximum performance potential from the reel. Its strength and impact resistance virtually eliminates the body of the reel flexing, transforming each turn of the handle into huge cranking power. The Hagane Body ensures that this reel is highly efficient and exceedingly strong. The reel has also been fitted with a Micro Modular Gearing. This system has been designed to provide you with a silky smooth retrieve, allowing you to exert maximum power with minimal resistances. It achieves this via the use of multiple small teeth – significantly more and significantly smaller than on any other gear system. This increases the number of contact points between the drive gear and the pinion gear at any given moment, creating a more efficient gearing system. The reel is available in three different gearing systems. The smallest gearing is 6.2:1, allowing you to retrieve an impressive 26 inches of line. The next reel moves up through to a 7.4:1 system, giving you 31 inches of line retrieval, and the largest is a whopping 8.5:1 system. This allows you to retrieve 36 inches of line with each turn of the handle.
As well as Micro Modular Gearing, the reel has also been designed with Shimano’s classic X-Ship technology. X-Ship is Shimano’s gearing durability technology which ensures that you reel can last for years. Either end of the pinion gear is supported by ball bearings, ensuring that the gear maintains its precise alignment with the drive gear throughout the retrieval process. Not only does this mean that the gears will stay in the same position under even the heaviest of loads, eliminating any friction between the spool shaft and the gear, but it also improves the casting performance of the reel – especially when fishing with lures on the lighter end of the spectrum. Another feature of the reel which has been designed to aid casting control when fishing with lighter lures is SCS Infinity. This is Shimano’s premier brake system technology which has been designed to provide easy-to-manage and highly consistent spool control and braking force. This system comes fitted with an external adjustment knob, too, which ensures that you can enjoy quick and precise adjustments – ideal for when you’re switching baits or for when the conditions change on the water.
