Thinking Anglers Tungskin Hooklength,

We were all really excited designing a new skinned hook link for "Thinking Angler's" We all agreed that it needed to be different as there are already quite a few different plastic coated skins around. We had previously discussed the use of tungsten injection in some way into a skin, you know ticks all the box's so to speak, sinks better etc... Little did we know actually how difficult it is to get tungsten into a skin, fortunately for us we came across this style of coating which traditionally has only ever been used in F1 and Natto but in turn this method was specially designed, adapted for fine extrusion and this became available to us to test.

Now we obviously checked the weight of the hook link against respective diameters of other types. And even though the tungsten is heavier as you would expect (30% added by proportion) it's the Density in water (i.e. comparison of specific gravity) where things really count. In our water tests most skins are just heavier than neutral density, meaning there not buoyant and will sink given you poke them about and remove tendency for surface tension to hold it. But the "Tungskin" Sinks far more convincingly. Measuring specific gravity is very scientific and beyond our capabilities. So its much easier to state the fact that the "Tungskin" contains 30% tungsten by volume and is an industry first and one that all of us are very happy to be involved with.

The braid is not regular dyneema but a special fibre produced for the medical industry only. So this is not available to fishing tackle braiders direct up until this point. The braid is chemically washed and sealed after colouring, prior to the extrusion process.Next was the colour and we both wanted a dark grey, silty colour so this is what we have started with. Im sure in time we will do other colours but for now we have the dark grey,. Which to be honest, once youve looked at how much silt, leafy matter and twigs that lay on the bottom of our lakes makes for a good choice. We were all extremely impressed with the colour.

One thing that became apparent was that although the skin was still very nice and supple the coating became a lot tougher than most of the other plastic coated skins, which is caused by the injection of the tungsten. But with a stripper tool, a lovely clean break was achieved when stripping back the coating from the dyneema. I had never used one of these tools before and have to admit that they are quite a neat bit of kit for this and a few different types of applications in rig construction, loops etc. The "Tungskin knots really well and steams beautifully and when I pack up and wind in, as long as Ive hit my clip on the cast it comes back in very straight, which are all very key things that we want from our rigs.

To the feel and first impressions its silky smooth and straightens very well, but to finish of any good rig the steaming of your hook link will always give you the best results by far. The price is relative to the price of tungsten injection, as it simply doubles the price! By using new technology it helps to move things forward in terms of terminal tackle design, surely a good thing! Rather than just doing the same as everyone else.
