Trakker Cayman Bivvy... The Review - Rob Shanks

I’ve always had a bit of an issue with bivvies to be honest, when it comes to my bank side sleeping arrangements I’m not easily pleased, being particular picky. Too big, to heavy, to flimsy, takes to long to set up, all issues I’ve encountered in the past, I’ve always found it tough to completely satisfy my needs.

In an ideal world a bivvy should be light and quick to erect and dismantle, this fits in with my style of fishing. I mainly fish overnighters on busy waters, I haven’t got time to be messing about, sometimes needing to put my bivvy up after dark, pack up early or move quickly on to fish, but simultaneously its got to be up for the challenge, it needs to be able to stand up to a host of tough conditions, big winds on open waters, rain, fire and brimstone, well maybe not brimstone but it needs to keep you comfortable in a variety of conditions.

So up popped the new Trakker Cayman, ok so it’s not top end but what it lacks in all singing and dancing nuclear proof materials it more than makes up for in usability and it didn’t let me down when on my first session it coped admirably with some pretty ferocious cold and windy weather and a nice dusting of snow thrown in to boot. 4oz Nylon means its light but the most significant weight saver is the two rib design.

Being a pram hood style bivvy it’s extremely stable and with the addition of the support bars that come as standard it is rock solid but you don’t have to use them if not required, you can comfortably carry them around with almost zero weight gain for when the weather dictates you need the extra strength. It comes with a light but heavy weight groundsheet which is handy for keeping warm through the colder months but come the warmer weather can again be left at home as the bivvy comes complete with a tension strap.

As well as all these features erection time is minimal, the two break ribs mean no messing around, simply pop the four joints together, attach the tension strap, peg out and fix the peak in position. Again the peak is a handy feature for keeping out the elements but personally to save weight and set up time I’ve removed the pole and just flap the peak back onto the roof and hold in position with the roof support pole.

All in all I’m extremely impressed, it has plenty of room for your kit and in its price bracket it is more than competitive, it’s simply in a class of its own, ideal for the mobile overnight / short session angler. The bivvy comes as standard with a generously sized carry bag which means packing up is hassle free (so no fighting to get it back in the bag on a wet overnighter) heavy duty pegs and a clear window if the standard mozzi door isn’t your cup of tea and an overwrap is available separately for that extra comfort in winter or on longer sessions as well as the 2 man option.

The Trakker Cayman is available at all Angling Direct stores, or you can check out all the details on our website...
