Big River Roach On The Stour... Richard Howland

I recently received a cracking email from AD Sittingbourne shop manager Richard Howland, who’s been enjoying some great sport on his local River Stour, Richard wrote…

‘Hi Chris

I have been told I should write and tell you about the last couple of week's fishing I've been doing on the River Stour in Canterbury...

As the temperature started to drop my thoughts turned to the River Stour in Canterbury, Kent where I love to roam the free stretches with my Drennan Acolyte 13ft float rod, Advanta Centrepin Reel and a landing net. Over the last few weeks I've been on Jury Service and with some of the days not being as long as a normal working day, I had a chance to grab a couple of hours before dark. So with this in mind I put a few bits in the car with some maggots in a cool tub, just in case.

Walking the banks, I had some fantastic fishing trotting a Drennan 4bb stick float down the deeper runs and eddies resulting in 10 Roach over 1lb 8oz, three over 2lb, four Chub over 4lb, loads of quality Dace, Perch, one Bream and three Eels!

One evening just before dark I saw a Sea trout jump; if I had not seen it with my own eyes I would have never believed it. It's nice to know the rivers are doing so well that you can turn up with minimal gear and have a lovely day's fishing just watching the float trot down and wondering what species will pull it under next.

Here are a few photos taken on my old phone. The weighs and what they are, are on the side of the photo.’
