Wychwood Solace Big Pit 65FS Reel Review

There seems to be a recurring theme with my tested reviews, and it’s the one I’m more than happy to continue. Given the opportunity, I always prefer to review gear that combines quality with value for money.

These reels are a classic example of what tackle is available if you aren’t blinkered by branding and all the hearsay about what you need.

There perform just as a good reel should and, generally, the build quality feels solid and reliable. I also have a knack of wearing stuff out because the nature of my fishing can be pretty demanding on tackle. These have taken there fair share of stick and have pretty much shrugged off every clumsy move.

The free-spool facility is a little juddery, but to be honest, when I’m fishing out in the pond I rarely use it. Unless I’m fishing close in, I see it as a supplementary function, rather than an essential. With or without, these cost just £99.99 each, which makes them a great buy for the money.

I really like the black finish and the discreet, yet classy, gold detailing in places. I can appreciate the aesthetics of these reels without them shouting: ‘Steal me!’ to anyone who might fancy chancing their arm. It also helps keep a low profile when needs be. After all, the first thing that will often stand out against a dull background is something that reflects light, such as a shiny spool or handle.

Specwise, the retrieve is very competitive, with a 4.8:1 gear ratio, which is in the region of one metre retrieved per turn of the handle.

Added features include an anti-twist line roller, a unique multiple-mark line clip and a silky-smooth-carbon geared drag. It also comes with a spare aluminium spool, not the cheap plastic cop-outs that some manufacturers include as their spares.

If you’re the type who likes to fold there handles, then good news! These come with a tidy hinge and collar mechanism so that they can be folded in for ‘neatness’ and then be re-engaged instantly when needed. It’s not something I bother doing but the mechanism saves a bit of time putting the rods back in the carryall, because there’s no need to undo the handle and screw to fold them.

On the whole, these reels are another example of suitably equipped, quality, functional gear that doesn’t leave an unnecessary crater in your bank account.
