Tackle Tuesday... Shimano Alivio Barbel Rods

The ‘glorius’ 16th is upon us and the rivers are once again the anglers play ground. Chub, Roach, Bream, Dace and Perch are ready for catching, but the big target for many of us who want to get back out on running water is that hard fighting whiskered torpedo, the Barbel.

If you’ve never caught one you’re in for a treat, and a shock – they pull like few other species. Because of this you’ll need the right gear to keep you in control and keep that smile on your face all the way to the net. So for today’s Tackle Tuesday, we take a look at one item that should be on your Barbel fishing radar for 2014.

Shimano Alivio AX Barbel Rod Review

There are plenty of Barbel rods on the market at different price points, some better than others. However, if you have the dosh, this new offering from the mighty Shimano stable is well worth a look.

The Alivio AX is the newest and cheapest Barbel rod from the famous brand, with the lighter of the two on offer coming in under £100. That, however doesn’t mean you’re not getting a very capable rod.

The lighter one is the AX Barbel Classic. Offering a 1.5lb test curve, which makes a great specimen rod for smaller rivers, with a progressive action that lets you enjoy the fight and enough power in reserve further down the blank to make sure you win it.

Because of the lightness in the tip it’s also a realistic tool for other species such as Chub and even Stillwater Bream and Tench, meaning that you get a very versatile tool for your money. The classic comes with an Avon top with three push in quivertips. What’s striking, and nice, is that the quivertips are black. There are no fancy colours, not even a layer of white paint, just black. It’s a theme that runs through the rod, very subtle, very understated, very workmanlike. This is a big plus factor for me and one that makes both Alivio rods look superb on the bank. These are backed up by details such as cork handles and Shimano Hardlite guides.

If you’re after a big gun for long chucks, heavy flows and monster feeders, you need to check out the Alivio AX Barbel Power.

Offering more of a backbone with a 1.75lb test curve, the Power comes with an Avon top and a quiver top with three push-in tips. Its well balanced and capable of casting a 4oz lead with surprising range and accuracy, without being a broomstick. A handy big-river rod with an RRP of £109.99.

There rods offer quality and control for a price tag that’s more than accessible if you’re serious about targeting Barbel this year.
