Wychwood The Slug Bobbin Review

First Impressions… With two different heads (one white and one coloured), hockey stick, two chains, a cord and two drag weights, the new packs of The Slug bobbins really have everything inside that you need. Try and buy all of these components separately from some other manufacturers and you'd be looking at an investment of the best part of £25 or more, so immediately they become excellent value for money.

The design is somewhat unique in that the weights are actually an integral part of the bobbin itself, and replace the plastic nylon part already in the head. This means that you're never adding any bulk to the bobbin itself, which keeps it nice and neat.

The downside is that replacing these parts involves pushing a pin out of the bobbin (you'll need a fine baiting needle or drill) which I can't help thinking is a bit fiddly than needs be.

Because of the double-pivot design The Slug is pretty versatile and lends itself to tight line and slack-line fishing, and when I was playing around with a set they seemed very sensitive.

Overall, then, save for the fiddly changing of the weights I reckon The Slug is a good all-round bobbin and, with all whats included in the pack, offers outstanding value for money.

The Review… I've always believed that bite indication is one area of Carp fishing that drastically needs improving. There is a huge selection of bobbins on the market to choose from and a lot of them claim to be the next big thing, and that they will help you see the slightest movement in your rig.

However, in reality your bite-indication system should be fine-tuned to suit the conditions and tactics that you are using on the day. This will put more Carp on the bank for you. The Slug, from Wychwood, enables you to set up the bobbin in a variety of ways to suit a host of fishing situations.

It includes one multi-functional head, one spare white body, one 3 inch and 8 inch chain and one 12 inch dacron cord. It also comes supplied with three interchangeable body weights - nylon 1g, 3g and zinc 6g.

The head is fitted with a line clip that allows you to use it free-running or held in one position between the line-clip arms, Elstow style.

The head pivots on two points, which is what makes it unique. This dual pivot point allows The Slug to pick up movement of the line, however small.

I always try to set my bobbin so that it is balanced to the conditions. If I am fishing at range I want it just heavy enough to not be effected by underwater drag caused by strong winds; if I am margin fishing with slack lines I want it to be as light as possible but to have enough tension so that it will register even the smallest occurrences.

I have used The Slug across a variety of fishing situations, from long range on a big windswept gravel pit to under my rod tips with slack lines in France. I have found that the dual-pivot head, combined with the selections of chains and cord, has meant that I can always achieve the best possible balance where even a very small movement of my line registers.

It does require some practice to get the balance correct, but with the various options available to you with The Slug, better bite indication can easily be achieved.
