Shimano X-Aero Baitrunner Review

Shimano has released a brand new bait runner reel for 2014. The X-Aero utilises the unique AR-C spool - a feature that helps reduce the friction caused by the spool lip. To further improve your distance, the two speed oscillation makes for great line lay. The spool capacity is also high, allowing you to fit just under 400 yards of 15lb line on, which is more than enough for the majority of anglers.

Line tangles are also a thing of the past with the spool guard which prevents the line becoming wrapped around the spool spindle when the line goes slack.

Shimano has also taken away the original double-handle orientation, favouring the single handle to reduce the weight to 580g. Despite being lighter, it doesn't feel weakened or flimsy and feels rock solid when connected to the reel seat on the rods, giving you the confidence to really put it through its paces.

As with all reels with the famous Shimano badge, they are super-smooth and built to last. It's rare that you ever hear of a Baitrunner reel having any problems and, like versions before, these are about as reliable as a reel gets.

The clutches and Baitrunner system are also super-smooth and with the rear-drag knob you are able to make fine adjustments to the drag when playing a fish.

A second, quality cold-forged aluminium spool is also included in the package and is simply pushed straight onto the spindle with minimum effort. A lot of spare spools are inferior in quality to the main spool, so it's refreshing to see one that fits the same specification. Cosmetically, the X-aero looks brilliant with it's understated gun-metal finish and distinct Baitrunner appearance. It looks as good as it performs.
