The first thing that struck me about the Oval was the coverage afforded from what is, essentially, a traditional oval. Although it doesn't seem particularly big in terms of footprint (JRC labels it as a 60in), the internal space is pretty generous.

The extended spines cover the ground with ease and are also a doodle to get nice and flush to the ground, while the internal folding mechanism (I never know what to call them!) is shorter than traditional brollies, thus negating the annoying cramped feeling when sat on your bedchair.

For anybody who has not used a brolly with these more compact systems, they are truly brilliant and the difference they make is astonishing.

There's another interesting feature of the Contact Oval that gives added coverage without adding bulk. The sides of the brolly extend around further than most traditional designs and, again, this makes a much bigger difference than you might imagine.

For all that, the benefits of an umbrella over a more full-blown bivvy still remain - it's super-easy to set up and it packs away to a much slimmer and more manageable profile.

The material is PU-coated heavy-duty nylon, with a hydrostatic rating of 10,000HH, which is more than waterproof enough.

There's a nylon groundsheet included as well as two aluminium, side storm poles and the front ribs also boast twin storm-pole attachments for extra stability in really rough conditions. There is also, for the hardcore brolly angler, an overwrap available separately.

In all, the Contact Oval represents excellent value for money in a brolly that ticks most boxes. Sure, you could upgrade to something with a few more bells and whistles, but you'll pay a heck of a lot more for the pleasure.
