Chinook II Charter Fishing Report – May

Chinook-Charter-Boat

Well what a change in the weather! This week and weekend has been absolutely glorious, we’ve enjoyed summer conditions, flat calm seas and superb fishing.

There are good numbers of Bass starting to show with fish around 6-7lb becoming regular captures, these have fallen for all manner of baits, but the best have been Lugworm and Ragworm. As we progress into June we should start to see some bigger fish turn up and I’m guessing/hoping that we will soon see some double figure show. These in general tend to be solitary fish and often prefer a nice fresh Squid or Mackerel.

There are plenty of small Smoothound up the Maplins with a few better ones to around 10lb now being caught, these hard fighting sport fish so increase in numbers as the month and season progresses.

As I’ve reported the last few weeks there are still lots of Thornbacks around, both inshore and offshore but I’m guessing it won’t be long till these inshore fish move out. These have provided excellent sport for quite some time now and look set to do so throughout the coming seasons, as stocks seem to be increasing every year.

There are still a few Codling being caught, mainly small fish, but there has been the odd bigger one lingering, with fish up to 7-10lb. The smaller fish will probably stay inshore now throughout the summer months, along with the Whiting, and whilst on the subject of Whiting we have recently been inundated with small pins. These really small Whiting have a tendency to go unnoticed on the rod tip, that is until a big Bass or Cod snaffles one!

The piers and estuaries in the surrounding areas have also started to fish now too, with school Bass, Whiting, Codling and the odd Thornback taking anglers baits, a mixture of Worm, Crab and Squid have all been successful.

Overall prospects are superb with increasing numbers of Hounds and Bass showing as well as reports of the first summer Mackerel and Tope showing up, as the weather warms both of these species should become viable targets for all boat anglers.
