Chinook II Charter Fishing Report – October II

Big influx of Codling!

Over the last couple of weeks and since my last report the fishing inshore has really picked up, with big numbers of Codling showing up in all areas, a lot of these fish have also pushed into the Estuaries, meaning almost whatever the weather and however windy it is, we are still able to get out and enjoy a days fishing.

These fish are hungry and are always on the look out for any food items, so big Lugworm and Squid baits fished hard on the bottom have been key. It's also been essential to change your baits regularly, not only because the scent can wash out very quickly, but also because the small Whiting and Crabs are on them in a flash.

The majority of Codling landed so far have been relatively small, but it seems as the weeks and seasons progress the stamp of fish improves and just last week Cod to over 12lb were landed.

There's also been plenty of Thornbacks around, even though the majority of the fish have fallen to anglers Cod fishing, they are still a very worthwhile target with Squid, Mackerel and Crab baits sorting out the bigger and better fish. Last week we had them onboard to just over 14lb.

As you can probably guess and like most parts of the UK, the Whiting are here in numbers! Even though the small fish can often be a pain, sometimes the bigger specimens are very welcome, especially on harder days. These will feed on most things, however they favour fish baits, with a nice strip of fresh Mackerel an absolute killer!

I've heard the piers has been fishing well too, with Walton Pier cropping up in conversation on more than one occasion. Codling, Whiting, Thornbacks, and Flatties have all been landed and decent sized mixed bags have not been uncommon, especially on the bigger tides. As you can imagine these have fallen to all manner of baits, however the freshly dug Lug is definitely a favourite.

Overall the fishing has been excellent, and the prospects look great for a really bumper season.

Tight lines, Phil.
