Description

A Piker's Progression, by John Watson When 'A Piker's Progress' was first published back in 1991 the piking landscape was rather different from that which we see today. So many changes have taken place, from the trout-water phenomenon, to the upsurge in interest in modern lure fishing, to the development and refinement of techniques for tackling large waters by use of boats. During all this time 'Watto' has been pursuing his own, individual path, as anyone who knows him well would expect. His views on both trout waters and lure fishing are somewhat dismissive, whilst his steadfast refusal to go gallivanting all over the country trophy-chasing with the rest of the 'circus' has meant that he has developed his knowledge and experience of his core theatre of operations, namely the Norfolk Broads and its environs. Not only that but he has, with pike-guiding, established a modern pike fishing phenomenon of his own, and has continued to make contributions to tackle development. With his distinctive, no-nonsense prose style and his irreverent approach to all aspects of piscatorial politics, his writing unfailingly comes across as not just indispensably informative but as witty and thought-provoking too. In short, the first edition of A Piker's Progress richly deserves its oft-quoted accolade as 'the best book on pike fishing ever written'. The New Edition The second part commences where its predecessor left off and brings the reader to the present day and the end of the 2008/09 season, covering the intervening eighteen years and the author's escapades during that time. Like the first part its a real roller-coaster ride, detailing not only the fish caught, but also numerous anglers encountered along the way and of course many incidents and situations,as well as no-holds barred opinion on the vagaries of the piking scene in Norfolk which all somehow seem to prove that pike fishing can be so much fun!
