Abu Garcia’s position as one of the biggest reel manufactures has been unchallenged in any real capacity for well over half a century. Not only is the brand famous for its high production quality – a fact which led to it being awarded the title of ‘Purveyor to the Royal Swedish Court’ for its continued manufacturing excellence – but it is also famous for the powerful reel series it has produced. The first of these is the Ambassadeur – a multiplier series that has been in production since 1952 and arguably the finest sea fishing reel series ever created. The second of these is the Cardinal series. This is a reel series that has been in production since the late 1960s and, with each reincarnation, simply grows in popularity and notoriety. This Abu Garcia Cardinal S RD is a lower budget version of the classic Cardinal reel which still offers some of the great features that has ensures the Cardinal has enjoyed such a long lifespan.
The Abu Garcia Cardinal S RD has been fitted with a graphite body and rotor. Graphite is strong, rigid, and lightweight, making it the ideal reel construction tool. The spool on this reel has been constructed from machined aluminium. This offers additional strength to the integrity of the reel without adding unnecessary weight and ensures that you can balance this reel perfectly on any number of fishing rods. You are able to achieve excellent line lay on this spool thanks to the slow oscillation technology at play – no matter what line type you prefer to use. The bail system on this reel has been manufactured with Abu Garcia’s unique Everlast system. The bail is often one of the first parts of your reel to show signs of wear and tear but, with this Everlast technology, the bail arm on the Cardinal S RD is one of the strongest elements of the reel.
To finish the reel, the Cardinal S RD has been fitted with three ball bearings, as well as one additional roller bearing. This provides a smooth operation no matter the strain the reel is under and ensures that the Cardinal S RD lives up to the impressive impression left by its predecessors.
