The Shimano Ultegra CI4+ XS-B combines the weightless strength of CI4+ material with the compact body design of the Ultegra reel to create a distance casting machine. CI4+ was originally developed by the Shimano cycling division in order to save weight on Shimano bikes. As soon the Shimano fishing division saw just how successful, strong, and rigid this material was it was immediately integrated into the manufacture of top end Shimano reels such as this Ultegra XS-B. Arguably, because of the weight saving capacity and ultra-rigidity of CI4+, the Ultegra allows you to transfer more energy from the cast through to the line – the end result of which is fantastic distance casts.

This isn’t the only element of the reel that lends itself to distance casting and the Ultegra CI4+ XS-B is fitted with a fantastic AR-C spool. This AR-C spool has a specially designed spool angled spool lip which significantly reduces the friction between the line and the spool – enabling the line to maintain speed and achieve great distances. This is combined with Aero Wrap II, Shimano’s bespoke worm gear oscillation system. Together they ensure that you are able to achieve perfect line lay each time.

If you thought the cast was a work of art then you’ll be amazed by the retrieve. X-Ship engineering in the gears supports the pinion, holding it the perfect position to enable maximum energy transfer between the handle and the gear. This gives you between 103cm and 105cm of line return per handle turn (depending on the size of the reel) – a whopping ratio of 4.3:1 and 5.3:1 on the respective reels.

For the fish playing fanatics this reel is fitted with waterproof instant drag, enabling you to switch between free play and fight mode in a matter of turns. This allows you to play with big fish under the tip of your rod with precision accuracy for ultimate enjoyment. Although the Ultegra CI4+ XS-B lends itself to carp fishing it is also ideal for cat fishing and sea fishing purposes.
