Ian Golds has been a proud angler ever since he first picked up at rod just a few months before his fourth birthday! He has been fishing since the early 1960s and attributes his current love of the sport to his first-ever catch: a humble flounder hauled from Langstone Harbour on a 6ft split cane rod. Throughout his childhood, Ian spent many hours (even those he was meant to be spending on his schoolwork) and summer holidays on a beach or bobbing about in a dinghy chasing many a piscatorial victim.
Ian Gold joined the Limpet Angling Club at an early age and took the club by storm when he won the senior championship at the tender age of 15! Always a dreamer, he was desperate to fish for Team England one day and spent many of his early years practising in open competitions with the aim of achieving his goal. That day came in 1989, when he represented the country in the World Championships and he has continued to represent England each year since. He has walked away with a plethora of Championship medals, in all colours, in the intervening years, for both team and individual events. He is especially proud of his ranking between 2006 and 2012, when he never left the top two spots!
Ian Golds the company was founded in 1985 after he was made redundant. Wanting to make the most of his angling knowledge, he set to work founding what is today one of the finest sea fishing tackle companies in the country. Although the company started off with bait digging, soon he had developed the Match Rest: a 6ft angled monopod/sand spike with adjustable cup and hooks for spare baited rigs. This innovative set up allowed the rod to be held above the waves in the highest position, but the set up suffered once the wind picked up. The design team went back to the drawing board and added two front legs to the system. The Match Rest became the Super Match Rest, a design that revolutionised rod support systems. The first of its kind, almost thirty years later the same product is still selling as well as ever!
Since the Super Match Rest was released all those years ago, many other products have joined it in the brand product portfolio such as the Ian Gold Tripod Spares. A range of luggage, match measures, rig wallets, bait thread dispensers, rods, casting thumb straps, IGLoo beach shelters, and a few other assorted items have all graced the Ian Golds catalogue pages.
Speaking about the brand in 2016, Ian has said: I aim to supply quality, non-gimmicky products and strive to design practical items that help anglers where it matters....on the beach. My own ideas, drawn from the experience of fishing many venues in the UK, plus a variety of beaches abroad, has shown me what is required and I have done my best to supply products that do exactly what is required in the best, most practical way I can. So, if you are looking for any of these items, you can trust the name of Ian Golds!
