Blue Shark

aka Prionace glauca

As a larger predatory fish, the blue shark has a long and slender body with a cone-pointed snout and an underslung mouth. It has 2 rows of serrated teeth and 5-gill slits. Its colouring tends to be dark blue that blends to a lighter blue on the flanks.

FactWith an impressive amount of sense to help the blue shark communicate and find prey, the blue shark can hear a beating heart from 20 miles away meaning any prey that is within that radius is in a lot of trouble!

Catch Experience Catch Experience

Expect to be needing a charter boat in order to target and catch blue sharks. These pelagic sharks are most abundant during the warmer summer months, but might pay the waters around England and Ireland a visit as early as May. To conserve energy, blue sharks are reasonable slow swimmers, but they are capable of swimming at high speeds and will put up a bit of a fight when hooked. Be advised that these species are known to roll on the line, so having a pair of sturdy gloves at hand is imperative to guide the shark to roll the other way. Most individuals weigh around 60lbs, and rarely over 100lbs so a 7'6" to 8ft 30lbs boat rod paired with a multiplier reel should do the trick for beginners. More experienced blue shark anglers could opt for slightly lighter tackle in the 20lbs class. In terms of line, it's best to use multi-stranded wire. A belt or harness will definitely make your life easier when trying to land these sharks.
