aka Leuciscus cephalus
The chub is a member of the carp family and can be confused with dace but can be distinguished by its larger and has redder fins. Chub can be seen gathering in large shoals in lowland rivers and streams and can sometimes be seen swimming near the surface of the water. With a greenish back but yellow-white underbelly, blunt snout, rounded body and a very large mouth.
Similar to other coarse fish, chub uses its olfactory receptors to identify predators before releasing chemical signals to its shoal. This acts as an alarm to its pack of fish and enables them to react when the threat of a predator is raised.
