aka Solea solea
Unlike other right-eyed flatfish, the Dover Sole is more oval-shaped and has a very small tail and long, thin fins. The fish can be found in warmer water, making it common around the south of the British Isles, in the English Channel, Irish Sea and southern parts of the North Sea and Europe. This flatfish is brown/grey in colour with dark stripes on its long and oval-shaped body.
The dover sole name is a result of the 1800s demand for sole in London. A regular and fast stagecoach service ran for most of the year to speed the catches of this species from the ports of Dover where the fish was and still is caught.
