Dover Sole

Dover Sole

aka Solea solea

Unlike other right-eyed flatfish, the Dover Sole is more oval-shaped and has a very small tail and long, thin fins. The fish can be found in warmer water, making it common around the south of the British Isles, in the English Channel, Irish Sea and southern parts of the North Sea and Europe. This flatfish is brown/grey in colour with dark stripes on its long and oval-shaped body.

FactThe dover sole name is a result of the 1800s demand for sole in London. A regular and fast stagecoach service ran for most of the year to speed the catches of this species from the ports of Dover where the fish was and still is caught.

Catch Experience Catch Experience

Dover sole spend a good part of their time suspended in the water bed on the blind side and tend to feed after dark so make sure to cast your bait near the shore at night. For even better chances aim to fish for sole when there is a rising tide. Dover sole do not respond particularly well to moving bait so anglers should allow bites from this fish to develop and avoid striking back too early as this will spook them, plus anglers should fish hard baits close to the seabed as this is where sole will be feeding. Anglers should always try to ensure fish are hooked by their lip and not gut-hooked or have swallowed the fishing hook. Dover soles have small mouths so small hooks and small baits are necessary to catch them safely. (1 – 6 sized hooks in long-shanked patterns are the most useful to aid unhooking). Using the correct sized hooks is one way of increasing the chances of lip-hooking fish.
