Grass Carp

Grass Carp

aka Ctenopharyngodon idella

Unlike some other carp, grass carp don’t have barbules and are a dark olive shading, with brownish-yellow colouring on the sides and a white belly. Grass carp are often delicate surface feeders due to their lack of barbules and they can also be identified by its elongated body with minuscule, tightly packed scales.

FactIn western Europe and in the USA, the main interest in grass carp has been in using it as a biological weed control agent for which it has been introduced.

Catch Experience Catch Experience

Carp fishing sometimes requires much patience! But seeing a 30+lb Grass Carp in your net makes it all worthwhile. Although grass carps are herbivores, they are known to be a hard catch. Due to its size, the bigger ones will pull an intense fight. Setting up the right way to catch a big heavy fish is very important. Using a carp fishing rod with a test curve at about 20 to 30 lbs line, a braided or a monofilament reel that can reach 180 meters of line. Circle hooks in size 1 to 2/0 range as grass carp have large, powerful mouths, preferably not the treble hooks as they can cause injuries leading to not being able to release them back. Grass carp are suspicious feeders hence why it can take a long time before getting a bite, usually covering the hook entirely with baits such as corn, boilies, bread, and fruits tends to deter their suspicions. Ledgering and chumming are suitable methods to catch them, but sight fishing allows anglers to see the fish in action by tailing it and watching them take the bite. Once caught, they will try to head back to weed beds for safety; this will include an intense amount of force depending on the size of the fish, which is why being wit and vigilant at all times is extremely important. To Unhook them safely, giving some time to rest before the procedure and having a disgorger and a good unhooking mat is best to handle them. Gently twisting and turning the hook out will work.
