aka Cyprinus carpio nudus
An artificially bred variety of the common carp, the leather carp or the 'naked carp' is known for its lack of scales and almost leather-like skin (hence the name). The leather carp prefers large bodies of slow or standing water and are more common in Europe freshwaters. In addtion to its very few scales, the leather carp can also be identified by its toothless, downwards pointing mouth, an upper lip that protrudes more than the lower lip and by the fish having a round snout.
The rarity of leather carp is a result of their reduced and weakened resistance to disease, slow growth and poor survival rate which for anglers, makes them a prized possession.
