Catch Experience Catch Experience

Spurdogs will bite suddenly, fight grudgingly up through the water column twisting and turning in the tide, often in short circles. They can dive when on the surface, but rarely take too much line. It is suggested that lead should be heavy enough to keep in contact with the seabed. When a fish bites from a spur, the rod tip pulls hard over the fish's weight and sets the hook. As they fight, they often move in small circles and drag the rod tip down hard. Larger spurdogs, however, may run, so be sure to use a good sturdy rod rest and lanyards to anchor it to the ground. A medium spurdog may pull the rod tip down and try to take the rod and rest with it. To help conserve stocks, anglers who catch spurdogs should return them to the sea. It is also important to be cautious when handling this fish as it is one of the few venomous fish in UK/European waters, with its spines secreting venom that causes swelling and discomfort in humans.
