Whiting

aka Merlangius merlangus

Like all members of the cod family, the whiting has three dorsal fins but can be identified by its large eyes and a slightly protruding upper jaw. Tending to stay in slightly deeper water during the day and shallower water at night, whiting are distributed across the northeastern Atlantic Ocean, ranging from the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, the Black Sea and parts of the Mediterranean Sea. Whiting tends to be a brownish, grey or greenish on its back that fades to a pale silver on the flanks and underbelly. ky

FactCommunication in these fishes is largely based on vision. The whiting's eyes have similar features to land vertebrates, therefore, they can identify a wide range of wavelengths when communicating in their shoals.

Catch Experience Catch Experience

Often viewed as the pest fish and dismissed as a less desirable species. With a low level of catching difficulty, the Whiting is often one of the first fish an angler catches, and for this reason, it is also cherished by many sea anglers. Whiting tends to take the bait when the sea is flat from shore or boat. This can range from surf beaches, deeper beaches, man-made structures or off the rock ledges. Due to its environment, it is recommended to use beachcaster rated 4-6 between 12ft and 13ft in length. Furthermore, reels loaded with 15 to 18 lb mono line and a 60 lb shock leader is ideal when fishing on shallow beaches. The Penn 525 series or other reels with similar tough gears are best suited for fishing from steep beaches, man-made structures, and rock ledges. Most rigs will catch a Whiting fish, but some rigs give better results for specific situations. A 3 hook flapper for general beach fishing, either shallow surf beaches or deeper steep-to beaches. A 1 Up/1 down clipped rig for man-made structures. Whiting fish are usually easy to catch, not putting much of a resistance once caught. Reeling them in quickly will work fine. To release them, removing the hook right after the catch will inflict less stress on them. Simply gently turning the hook out of their mouth will do the job. It is important not to keep them out of the water for too long, or they will die rapidly.
