aka Merlangius merlangus
Like all members of the cod family, the whiting has three dorsal fins but can be identified by its large eyes and a slightly protruding upper jaw. Tending to stay in slightly deeper water during the day and shallower water at night, whiting are distributed across the northeastern Atlantic Ocean, ranging from the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, the Black Sea and parts of the Mediterranean Sea. Whiting tends to be a brownish, grey or greenish on its back that fades to a pale silver on the flanks and underbelly. ky
Communication in these fishes is largely based on vision. The whiting's eyes have similar features to land vertebrates, therefore, they can identify a wide range of wavelengths when communicating in their shoals.
