Yellowfin Tuna

Yellowfin Tuna

aka Thunnus albacares

A member of the Scombridae family and the fasted of all the tuna species, the yellowfin tuna has also been called the Allison’s tuna, Pacific long-tailed tuna, and yellow-fin tunny. With worldwide distribution, yellowfin tunas prefer tropical and subtropical waters such as thePacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans but avoid the Mediterranean. A torpedo-shaped fish, the yellowfin tuna is a metallic blue colour with yellow sides and a silver belly. Most striking are its long fins and finlets, which are bright yellow in colour.

FactThough almost all fishes are cold blooded, yellowfin tunas have a specialised blood vessel structure – called a countercurrent exchanger – that allows them to maintain a body temperature that is higher than the surrounding water.

Catch Experience Catch Experience

Fast swimmers and ferocious fighters, few fish are as fun to catch as the yellowfin tuna. This fish often feeds near the surface, so it is possible to use topwater techniques. Scale your tackle to the size and weight of the fish you're targeting. Depending on their size, they will attack any variety of baits you offer so be ready for a harsh strike on your line. Anglers should try to keep their line tight, especially as the fish gets near the boat because you lose the safety factor of line stretch. Seen as the alternative to those capturing and eating the rarer bluefin tuna, the yellowfin are still in the near-threatened category meaning that pleasure anglers should take lots of care when handling these big fighting fish. This species of tuna are also a top predator in the marine food chain, and so, maintaining a balance in the ocean environment is vital. Only take what you need as a pleasure angler and be sure to gently return those you do not intend to eat.
