In this episode of Specimen Series, you join Phil Spinks on a local commercial fishery targeting large perch. Phil talks through why he's fished these lakes at this time of year, as well as his favourite method for targeting these commercial fishery perch, which are so often forgotten about or never fished for at all!
The Advanta X5 float rods are Phil's choice for targeting large still water perch. They have the perfect action allowing you to enjoy the fight of a large perch, but also enough power to handle any rough small to medium-sized carp that often turn up.
The Advanta X5 reels especially in the 40FD size balance perfectly with the X5 float rods. The shallow spool depth is perfect for using a 4-5lb breaking strain line for the big perch.
The RVS folding spoon nets are available in 22" and 30", the 22" is Phil's choice for big perch. If you are likely to encounter a few larger carp, then perhaps the 30" is a good option.
This solid reliable landing net handles are Phil's choice for most of his specimen fishing. Without doubt, they are one of the strongest extendable net handles out there.
The Advanta Endurance rucksack has enough storage inside for all Phil's perch tackle and bait, but still allows him to stay mobile.
The Advanta relaxa lite chair offers extreme comfort, but still only weighs 5kg. Not wanting to carry lots of heavy tackle this is an obvious choice for Phil's mobile approach to most of his angling.
Available in several different sizes these floats suit Phil's approach to still water perch fishing perfectly. If fishing in deeper water the larger sizes also can be adapted as fishing slider float style. The thinner insert tip offers a great bite indication.
Drennan Supplex line is a favourite of Phil's, especially when float fishing. The thin diameter and supple nature of the line make it perfect for float fishing. But most importantly the line is tough and has great knot strength so that it doesn't let Phil down when a big perch or rogue carp comes along.
Finding a hook suitable for large perch and fitting within the barbless hook rule of many small still waters can be difficult. The hook needs to be available in size 8's but not be too thick in the wire-like most carp style hooks. These hooks are perfect for fishing large lobworms or king prawns.
The Drennan 2 rod quiver allows Phil to carry his Rod or rods set up, along with his bank sticks and landing net handle. The quiver also suits Phil's mobile approach giving him the easy option of moving swims several times if necessary.
Big perch needs to be cared for and this small mat is a perfect size. The Mat can be rolled up and attached to Phil's rucksack to suit his mobile approach. The mat is also large enough to protect small carp, if bigger carp are present then a larger mat would be a better option.
