For anglers growing up with ESPN TV in the mid 1990’s Jose Wejebe was an angler to be revered. Born in Cuba and raised in Florida after his parents fled the Fidel Castro government, Jose discovered his love of marine life early. He obtained his captains licence at the age of 18 and, despite his youth, he quickly became one of the most respected charter captains on the Florida Keys. In 1995, after helping with the filming of another angling TV show, Jose was approached to be the star of his own show: The Spanish Fly. One of the most popular angling shows of its kind, everyone who watched was infected with Jose’s passion for angling. Tragically, in April 2012 Jose died following a plane crash. Flying was Jose second passion and was taking his small plane out for a pleasure flight when, shortly after takeoff, it crashed. The angling world entered a stage of mourning as it grieved the loss of one of its most beloved sons.
