During the autumn season, anglers face shorter daylight hours and colder weather. The numbers of anglers dwindle on the banks as the peak period of summer ends. Autumn does not mean you need to put away the fishing chair and hang up your rods, it is one of the best times of the year to be fishing!
You may be an angler with little ones and with the October half-term school holidays, it’s a great time to get the juniors having a go. Autumn does come with its challenges for all disciplines as fish become shyer, inhabiting the margins and much easier to spook.
If you want to try something new, like coarse fishing, fishing with a whip in autumn is good. Whips can introduce new anglers to a rod and reel, so they can target areas further out were more confident fish lay. With Autumn fishing you should go careful on feed, to begin with, feeding maggots, and small baits little and often, with a catapult.
A great tip for autumn is to fish short afternoon sessions as these are the best water temperatures of the day, reaching its highest, often triggering fish to feed. So grab your bivvy or umbrella, along with a hoody and get to the waters after work!
