An Early Spring Session... Jack Hudson-Edwards

This monring I recieved a lovely catch report and pictures from keen young Carper and AD regular Jack Hudson-EdwardsI For such a young man, I was impressed with Jacks writing style, so much so that I thought I'd share it with you all! So rather than me ramble on, I'll let Jack take it away...

As the nights grew lighter and the bird song louder everything seemed to smell and look a lot more like spring.

At this time of the year the water temperature rises and the fish start to come out of their winter slumber, their metabolism starts to increase and with the sudden increase of activity the carp have to feed.

With a day session planned on my syndicate the car was packed the night before in preparation for an early start the next morning. The air felt cold and heavy but nothing unusual. Being optimistic I was still more than revved up to go fishing and was soon arriving at the lake; although 2 hours later than I intended.

Having seen no signs of fish I decided to try a swim that gave me a lot of water and water that I knew quite well. I had already got my marks for my spots having noted them down on my phone but used 2 bank sticks 12 ft apart and counted the wraps just to make sure I was super accurate.

I soon had 2 snowman rigs sailing out to their intended spot. I was using Retro Bait’s White Chocolate 18mm boilies topped off with the matching pop ups In 12mm, I had complete confidence in this bait which I think is very important in all aspects of fishing not just carp fishing.

Speaking to a few people that were fishing I soon picked up on the poor form of the lake recently with nothing bigger than 21lb out since the start of the New Year. I decided to spread around half a kilo of the white chocolate 18mm boilies around my intended area using the Nash cyber shot throwing stick before sitting back for a well needed brew.

Just a couple of hours later one of my alarms let out a few bleeps before the reel started to tick over and with no major problems the fish was soon wallowing around the margins ready to be scooped up by the awaiting landing net. Once in the net, peeling open the mesh I was met with and array of big uneven golden scales reflecting the early morning sun. The fish was nailed and wasn’t coming off in hurry.

The Swim Tackle stuff had served their purpose and the Swim Tackle Jobba curve hook did more than I could ask for. After that capture both rods were redone, hook points were checked and fresh bait was put on before the spot was topped back up again with a few more white chocolate boilies.

There was no more action until right at the end when everything was packed up and there was just one rod left on the deck. From the corner of my eye I noticed the line pull tight and I was soon doing battle with a very angry carp. This fish made it clear that it wasn’t a little one and yards of line were frequently stripped off the reel. Once again the Retro baits had done its job tempting another decent fish. The swim tackle stuff had nailed the fish yet again and this short day session had turned into quite an impressive one. On the scales the chunky mirror settled at just under 23lb and looked like one of the rarely caught originals. Result!

You don’t need to spend days on the bank to get good results!

Thanks for reading...
