Shimano Aerlex XSA Reel The Shimano Aerlex XS-A is a workhorse of a surf reel. Designed with heavy duty surf casting in mind, Shimano has fitted this reel with an instant drag system which enables you to switch the spool from a freespool setting into a fight setting in only a few rotations by simply tightening the instant drag lever on the front of the spool. A tough performance piece, this reel has been fitted with Aero Wrap II – one of the best line lay systems in the world which enables you to maintain speed during the cast, thus improving casting distance. With two speed oscillation, Aero Wrap II also has a pitch to set the optimum oscillation speed. This reel is set up to be a casting machine, the patented AR-C spool features a unique spool lip which enables the line to leave the spool in significantly smaller and tighter coils, significantly reducing the friction of the cast as well as the risk of backlash and wind knots when you are fishing with a braid. These two combine to seriously improve distance casting ability. The gearing of the reel has been constructed from cold forged aluminium, making it incredibly strong and durable. This makes the Aerlex XS-A incredibly high torque, and it has an impressive 4.6:1 retrieve ratio. This incredible retrieve strength allows the Aerlex to be able to handle big fish with relative ease. Although intended as a surf reel, it can also be used for spodding on large inland waters. Available in three sizes, the 6000XS-A is 715g, the 7000XS-A is 700g, and the 8000XS-A is a mere 690g.
