Abu Garcia Cardinal Reel

Abu Garcia is one of the biggest names in reels and the company has been at the forefront of reel technology advancement in Europe since the mid 1950’s. This was when the first of Abu Garcia’s two great reel series was released: the Ambassadeur. The Ambassadeur is possibly the best selling multiplier series in reel history and an incarnation has been in production since 1952. The next great reel series to come out of Abu Garcia was the Cardinal. Released in the mid 1960s, the Cardinal offers high performance at an exceptional price point – and this latest iteration is no different.

The first thing you’ll notice about this re-mastered reel is its stunning cosmetics. Modern and sleek, the matt black of the main reel is accented with vivid red. This is one reel that is sure to make you stand out at the water’s edge. The next thing you’ll notice about the Cardinal is its incredible list of product specifications. Fitted with two bearings, the Cardinal is an exceptionally smooth operating reel and to use it feels like using a reel of twice its price. The reel is fitted with an anti-reverse bearing, too, which is a feature most often seen on significantly more expensive models. This bearing works to stop fish in their tracks as they run – resulting in more positive hooksets and more landed catches. The frame of the Cardinal is constructed from lightweight and durable graphite, ensuring that it sits wonderfully and weightlessly on a number of rods across the spectrum.

This whole series of Cardinal reels are purpose built to perform exceptionally doing light lure work and are all ideal for light rock fishing too. The smaller 50 size is best used in light rock fishing as it offers great delicacy. The mid-sized 52 is ideal for use with slightly bigger lures and the largest 54 reel is perfect for standard lure fishing operations – for example when targeting pike, bass, and salmon. This is a reel that can be used to great effect fresh water or sea fishing.
