If you grew up using battery-powered, natural gas, or even paraffin hurricane-type lanterns, you’ve probably got a soft spot for this classic light design that has lasted many years. It’s not without its drawbacks, though. The ‘all-round’ nature of the light it casts is mainly directed in the horizontal plane, with shadows being cast from the top and bottom of the casing. Older sources of power such as paraffin were quite dangerous and needed careful watching to prevent accidents. Conventional ‘block’ batteries were heavy and began to dim long before they ran out. A spare tungsten lamp always had to be kept to hand, too.
The SAT-A-LITE Flash Lantern from Chub Fishing takes all the best of the classic lantern design and brings it firmly into the 21st Century. It’s great for bringing light into your bivvy or umbrella on an overnight carp session. This LED light is powered by four AA batteries, combining long-lasting low energy lights with a much smaller power source that can be rechargeable if you wish. The lighting arrangement inside bounces light from the LED array onto a special conical reflector that ‘pushes’ the light upwards as well out outwards, to illuminate more of the space in which it is used. The LEDs themselves are manufactured by Cree Inc, a leading light in LED development.
If uplighting or a more torch-like directional light is what you really need, this lantern can deliver with the large top-mounted LED in the cap. Switching between the two modes is a simple case of turning the collar at the top. It has two intensity settings, the higher of which has an output of 180 lumens, which is perfect for lighting the extra room in 2-man shelters and similar sizes.
You can sit this lamp on a table or other hard and stable surface or you can hang it from the ceiling of your shelter with the included carabiner, whatever suits you. So, if you’re looking for a standard lantern-style light but with up-to-date features that relegates all the old niggles to the distant past, the Chub SAT-A-LITE Flash Lantern certainly deserves a closer look.
