Shimano have long been one of the most trusted manufacturers within the fishing industry, especially when it comes to reels, Shimano are the creators of Baitrunner technology, now commonplace among reel manufacturers the world over. On buying a Shimano reel you can be sure you’re purchasing a quality piece of kit that is going to aid both cast and retrieve.

The Catana FD is the best-selling spinning reel in Europe but is equally adept in the match discipline and will comfortably negotiate your next session on a commercial. Its popularity is defined by its strong structure yet smooth action and being a Shimano reel, you can rely on it for years to come.

The body of the Catana is constructed from XT-7, the original Shimano composite is reliable, robust and contributes to the overall lightweight structure of the reel. Visually, the Catana FD has a stealthy appearance, the black body accented by a silver spool and diecast zinc handle presents a stylish yet understated look.

The spool itself is constructed from diecast aluminium and operates on 2+1 ball bearing system, the reel also utilises Shimano’s Varispeed II technology which improves spool oscillation, aiding the laying of line on your spool minimising tangles on cast and retrieve – an important feature for a spinning reel when you consider the amount of times you will recast during a spinning session. Further aiding the smoothness of the Catana is AR-C Spool technology, a patented design with an angled spool lip, allowing line to leave the spool with less friction and in smaller coils, resulting in longer casts even when using braid.

The Shimano Catana FD Reel is available at Angling Direct in the 2500, 3000 and 4000 models, the weight of which is 260g, 260g and 335g, respectively. The Catana is an allrounder and will do a job for you regardless of your fishing discipline.
