Autumn Carp Fishing, UK - Tips & Tricks

Autumn is PB season, this time of year carp are at their peak weight for the year, after a summer season of heavy feeding, and with winter around the corner the carp are stocking up before they begin to feed less regularly.

Autumn is a great time to be on the bank, the conditions might not be perfect, but venues are quieter, giving you a greater chance of dropping in on the peg that takes your fancy. Some venues can become peggy at this time of year, with certain swims dying off completely at this time of year.

As we transition from Summer to Autumn, there are some subtle adjustments you will need to make to you carp fishing in the UK. Its time to put the deep water zigs and bread bombs away and focus on bait fishing a certain spot.

Location and baiting become of paramount importance – in fairness, location and baiting approach is always important –  even more so at this time of the year.

Location

In terms of location, carp will group together tighter as the temperature continues to drop, making location even more important than usual, your hook bait and other offerings need to be ‘on the money’.

Harness local knowledge of the venue before you pick a swim, find out what pegs fish well at this time of year, and those pegs that die off.

Keep the elements in the back of your mind, if the sun is basking on a shallower part of your chosen venue, chances are the carp will be there, soaking up the last of the sun before the long, hard winter.

Baiting Approach

One tactic anglers favour at this time of year is fishing multiple rods over the same spot, the theory being that once you have located the fish, you need to do your upmost in terms of giving yourself the best chance to hook one of them.

In terms of baiting approach, you don’t need to deviate from your summer methods too much, save that for later in the year. However, the presentation needs to be spot on to give yourself the best chance of coercing the shoaling carp to feed as a group.

PVA bags, spods full of bait and the trusty bait boat will ensure you’re ‘on the money’ in terms of presentation and topping up your swim.

To reiterate, this is the best time to get out on the bank and land yourself a new PB, so grab your beanie, big coat and the 5-season sleeping back and brave the drop in termperature, it will be worth it!
