Tackle Up For The Traditional Fishing Season

Every winter, the fishing industry sees a drop in the number of anglers heading to the bankside. Although there are still plenty of opportunities to catch, with some of the best fishing coming in the colder months, many anglers are just not up for sitting in the cold. We, here at Angling Direct want to give anglers a nudge to change that mindset, especially as we enter spring and before the traditional fishing season comes to an end.

What Is Closed Fishing Season?

The traditional close season for coarse fishing occurs every year for 3 months to give coarse fish time to spawn. Anglers can still fish private lakes and some canals during this time but river anglers should head to banks before March 15th, when the close season starts.

What are the months you are not allowed to fish in the UK?

According to the Environment Agency; “The coarse fish close season runs from 15 March until 15 June inclusive on rivers, streams, drains, some canals and specified SSSI still waters.”

Can You Still Catch Fish In Closed Season

  • Canals are open all year round

  • Commercial fisheries will remain open

  • Reservoirs can be open year-round for fishing

  • Private fishing lakes will remain open (depending on the owner)

Of course, you can try out saltwater fishing also and change up your tactics with some sea fishing tackle!

Reasons to fish before the traditional fishing closed season:

The traditional fishing season ends on March 14th! For the new coarse anglers, you may not realise that we only have a month of river fishing left until the spawning season is over for coarse fish (June 16th).

River Fishing: From March 15th, anglers will lose access to many fishing venues such as the Norfolk broads and your local rivers! Reap the rewards of the rivers now!

Stress-Relief: Angling provides an escape from the stress of daily life and an opportunity to connect with nature and enjoy the great outdoors.

Warmer Weather: As the weather starts to warm up and the water temperatures rise, the fish start to become more active, making it the perfect time to hit the water and start catching.

So, get out and fish on your local river before it closes for the spawning season.
