Limited Time, Great Result - Jack Hudson-Edwards

The last few weeks have been very kind to me. I’ve managed not just one but 3 seven fish hauls within the last five weeks. However last weekend was one I won’t forget in a while. It started off like any other day; the bright sunshine rose above the hills and broke through the clouds whilst I carefully packed the car being careful not to forget anything (this time).

Arriving at the lake sporting the new Carp Couture Clothing there was no real need to rush to a peg so I walked around the Lake looking for signs of fish but there was no movement until I reached the bottom end of the lake. It was here where a rather large shoal of carp had decided to congregate and could be seen milling around between a cattle drink in only a few feet of water!

This was an opportunity not to be missed and so a rig was quickly put onto a spot just past the fence post. T he line was slackened off so that I didn’t spook any fish as they came past and I was pretty confident my little Retro Baits pop up would attract a fish.

Around half an hour later one of the fish had clearly made a mistake as it bolted off stripping yards of line and after a very tense battle a nice mid twenty was soon sitting in the folds of my net. Looking back at the spot it was apparent that there were still a few fish in the vicinity so a fresh rig with a new, sharp hook was soon sitting pretty on the spot. Only ten minutes later and déjà vu! Another twenty was soon gulping for air. Fishing in two foot of water does have its problems and the fish soon relocated somewhere else.

Time for a new plan… Having fished this swim plenty of times before I knew the exact amount of wraps needed to fish safely to a far snag on the other side of the lake so Half a kilo of Retro Baits meaty garlic was spread across the two rods, just enough to encourage  a bite and keep them there.

After a little while the first fish picked up the rig and the rod hooped around due to fishing locked up. Whilst lifting into the fish my other rod decided to burst into life and I now had two angry carp trying to get back to the snag. With a bit of help from my grandad two lovely fish were soon hitting the spreader blocks, one being an absolute stunner! With the pictures done and the fish returned to their watery home, fresh rigs were tied and soon sailing out 90+ yards to the spot.  I decided not to put anymore bait in as the fish were obviously homing in on the hook baits fairly quickly and so I thought another bite could be on the cards.

For once I was right, only this time the long surging runs told me it was a fish I wouldn’t want to lose. This one tried to go round posts and everything and with every shake of the head my heart beat faster until finally, I could relax. At just over 20lb it wasn’t the size that amazed me it was the length of the fish, at well over 2 and a half feet this was one serious common.

After having three fish off half a kilo of Meaty Garlic i thought it was now time to add more bait and so another half a kilo was soon being fired out over the spot. It obviously worked as the remaining few hours of the session saw 3 more stunners on the bank!

Who says you can’t catch many fish on a day session.
