Dave Lane’s journey into the world of angling began in the mid-sixties, fishing alongside his father. In those early years, Dave was an all round specimen angler, becoming particularly skilled at catching Tench during the summer and switching focus to Pike in the winter months. By 1970, he had landed his first carp on floating crust, a moment that would spark a lifelong obsession. 

Growing up in Sussex, Dave spent countless hours exploring the gravel pits around Chichester. It was here that his passion for larger waters and targeting specific fish began to take shape. By the 1990s, he had made his way to the legendary Colne Valley, widely regarded as the Mecca for UK carp anglers. On iconic waters such as Pit 4 and Harefield, Dave honed his craft and caught his first thirty-pound carp.

His success continued at Horton, where he became the first UK angler to catch two, three, and then four different carp over forty pounds. During this period, he was twice awarded the prestigious Carp Angler of the Year title, cementing his reputation as one of the sport’s elite.

Dave’s next chapter unfolded at Wraysbury, where he landed his first fifty-pound carp. Around this time, he began consulting for bait and tackle companies, an experience that laid the foundation for his future career in the angling industry. His first book, An Obsession with Carp was published in 1998, and he became a regular contributor to leading carp fishing magazines. His passion for photography proved to be the perfect complement to his writing, capturing the essence of his adventures with striking imagery.

Over the following years, Dave travelled across the UK, targeting elusive big carp from some of the country’s most challenging waters. By 2004, he had achieved an unprecedented milestone; five different UK fifties. His fifth was none other than the legendary Black Mirror from Colne Mere, one of the most sought-after carp in the world. His tally of fifty-pound carp has grown to include three more giants, among them the elusive Burghfield Common. 

These days Dave continues the vast, windswept gravel pits and wild waters that many find too intimidating. For him, these places offer tranquillity, adventure, and the thrill of pioneering. His story is one of dedication, passion, and a relentless pursuit of carp fishing excellence.
