Chinook II Charter Fishing Report – May

The Bass Are Arriving…

It’s what we’ve all been waiting for, the Bass are arriving and it looks like being a bumper year as good numbers of fish have now started to show in nearly all area’s! Already this year, and infact just on Sunday, I heard reports of a 12lb fish landed from a private boat.

On my own boat we had well over 30 of them, lots of small fish which were all returned, but with the odd bigger one to around 6lb mixed in. The best bait to simply get a bite was straight Lugworm, with those anglers willing to sit it out fishing Squid, picking up the slightly better ones.

Inshore the Thornbacks have really thickened up and bumper catches of 30-40 fish have not been uncommon. Once again as these fish are breeding fish they are returned alive. Best baits have been Squid and Herring, however there has been that many of them that they have even been landed on Lugworm!

The Cod have all but gone, but there is still the odd straggler, as Keith Allen found out on Sunday, landing a prime fish of around 7lb.

Offshore sport is slowly improving as gradually more and more Smoothound are begging to show. The best we recorded last week was a lovely fit fish of 8lb. These will readily take Squid and Crab baits fished on running ledger rigs and offer some of the finest sport available.

Those anglers fishing offshore for the Bass have been treated to some quality Flatfish sport, with some fine specimen Dabs falling to there lugworm hookbaits. Even though they don’t grow to mammoth proportions, these tasty little Flatfish can keep rod tips knocking in the quiet periods.

Overall general prospects look superb, with this season shaping up to be one of the best in many years!
