Wednesday Review... Vass-Tex 305-5 Breathable Chest Waders

Over the past nine or ten months I have been putting the Vass-Tex 305 breathable chest waders to the test. I must admit I’d never shelled out on breathable waders in the past, sticking to tried and trusted materials. I’d heard about some breathable waders not being as waterproof as they might be, which to my mind kind of defeats the object. Okay you might not get condensation from sweat, but what good is that if you get seepage coming in?

I was also a bit biased against breathable’s from the start, as to me they were more for game anglers with money to burn, and I wasn’t sure they would be up to sea angling situations.

During the time I’ve had these waders I’ve had some very long walks to get to certain marks. These covered area’s that included soft mud, sharp shells and rocks for these to contend with. The waders certainly coped with ease and I did notice that there was no condensation or dampness inside from any source.



I’ll be honest, I tried and tried to be very tough on these waders so that I could find a fault. However, they were unbreakable and totally surprised me on how well they came through the extended test. I was certain I could find some fault with them as nothing is long lasting - how wrong I was!

I’ve often gone through a pair of waders in a year, sometimes less, but these are in a different class.

Over the years I have tried most brands of waders with only a few lasting three or four outings. This was due to them failing at the seams of the boots, or when the materials split. These waders aren’t cheap, but you do get what you pay for.

They include an inside pocket which is very handy for storing keys or mobile phones. This not only keeps them safe but also 100 percent dry. These is also an outside pocket, which is handy for storing your bait elastic or other things that you need to get your hands on quickly while fishing.

The shoulder straps are very robust and are well fitted, they are super strong and more importantly, comfortable. They don’t seem to slip off your shoulders like some other brands seem too.



Features include the very impressive tough Vass boot (available studded or non-studded), which has a wider calf and foot fitting for comfort. This is a real winner - no messing about with wading boots, which are an additional expense and another item to forget to pack in the car. For us sea anglers these Vass boots have been tried and tested over the years and show that these waders have quality from the ground up.

The waist belt also improves the fit of the waders and makes them very comfortable to wear.

They are very flexible in use - bending and kneeling are no problem - and they provide excellent coverage. They have good wind-stopping properties as well, which make them a good choice for winter.

The more I use these waders the more I like them - I’m looking forward to getting plenty more mileage out of them too.
