The new HD MHR Brolly from Wychwood impresses on arrival and Karl Jenkinson thinks its gone the extra mile with its features.

Having the D-ploy bivvy and a full system brolly in it’s stable already, Wychwood has now released an open-fronted model for the angling fraternity.

Initially looking at the spec there are a lot of boxes ticked. The brolly unit and storm poles weigh just 3.6kg, it comes with Wychwoods five-year warranty, and it has a space saving boss designed to give you the maximum amount of room possible under the shelter. Where this brolly differs from the rest is the smaller details that just edge it ahead of its competitors.

The two supplied storm poles come fitted and are folded back in towards the ribs with small clip device - perfect. Not only is this a brilliant idea, but there’s also an attached neoprene cover to fit over the screw point ends, inevitably saving any damage occuring - although the 10,000mm hydrostatic head RipStop material will prevent tearing anyway.

Two internal mesh pockets can store all manner of items, including valuables or remote receivers and, cleverly, the draught-excluding flat at the back is extended by a couple of feet. Although this sounds like a basic feature, if you choose not to use the supplied heavy-duty half groundsheet, there’s a large area behind the bed chair to keep things off the wet or muddy ground - a real help for anyone with camera kit travelling as light as possible, for example.

The brolly also boasts two rod-retaining straps and the aluminium pegging points will stand the test of time. The bag is more than ample to fit the brolly back into, and with the screw-in pole that enables you to set up the brolly, you could easily open it in seconds, leaving the pole attached to hold it up if a downpour catches you out.

The Verdict Going the extra mile and thinking about the functions has really set this brolly apart - I’m impressed. A host of features make this the most user-friendly, pratical brolly I’ve seen.
