Bells Mill Fishery, Open Canal Match - Daz Jukes

On Sunday, Daz Jukes, assistant manager at Angling Direct Willenhall, took part in the first open canal match at Bells Mill Fishery, a purpose-built six-acre carp, match and pleasure fishery situated between the Stourbridge canal and the River Stour in the West Midlands. Here’s how he got on:

“Today I’ve been at the first Bells Mill Fishery open canal match; it was the first match that had taken place on this section of canal in years, so no one knew how it would fish.

“I drew peg four; walking up the cut it looked lovely, but unfortunately you could see the bottom - even at 10m it was clear. So, I set up a Dino Favorit 0.1g float for squat and the same again, but with a slightly bigger hook, for fishing the pinkie and maggot. I fed three balls of Sensas Lake and fine mouture with some black dye in at the bottom of the far shelf, a choppy line at 13m in some stickups - although never had a bite on that line - and a hemp line towards some overhanging trees.

“The float for the latter was the Dino Gino 0.1g, and I caught one fish on this line. For a maggot line down the track I used the brilliant Dino Caster 0.15g, which caught two fish.

“It was a strange day, as I only caught for two-and-a-bit hours and had nowhere to chase fish as the peg was so shallow the boats killed it because of the way they came past three of us in a row, but they couldn’t do anything about that because of the shape of the bend.

“I ended up with 2-15-10, which to my surprise was a double-default section win - happy days!

“It was great to get out on the bank again after a few weeks off, even if it fished hard for some folks.”
