Due to the popularity and positive feedback received from our last Carp Fishing buying guide we thought it was about time we wrote and published an up to date, new version, so here goes…

Carp Fishing Buying Guides – Indicators

To go with your bite alarm you need another sort of indicator, this is either a bobbin or a swinger, and it neatly clips on to your line between your bite alarm and reel. It’s designed to provide a visual indication as to what’s happening with your baited rig, if the carp picks your bait up and your indicator hits the floor then the fish is running towards you, if it rises up to the rod then the carp is swimming away from you. In modern carp fishing a choice of indicator is often made purely from an image point of view, as many of them can be customized to be unique to the angler. The only real difference between bobbins and swingers is that bobbins use a chain or cord and hangers use a fixed bar. As you can imagine because of this bobbins will move around more in the wind, perhaps causing false indications, but overall it means they are more sensitive than swingers.

Some Indicators we would recommend are the excellent new Korda Stow Range, these allow unparalleled sensitivity when using slack or tight lines. The specially configured line clip helps transmit ANY line movement into positive indications that help you to understand what’s happening at the rig end and Stows are especially good at picking up line bites. The bobbins are available as ready-to-go systems, or as separate, interchangeable components. This means that the systems can be bought off the peg, or built to personal preference.

Rod Support

Obviously you need to screw your bite alarm into something stable so it’s able to hold your rod and reel for long periods of time whilst waiting for a bite, also something which keeps your rod secure when a carp takes your bait and screams off! Now there are three simple set ups, you can either choose a rod pod, bansticks with buzz bars, or single banksticks. Now there isn’t huge amounts to talk about when it comes to rod support, you just need to think about the venues you fish, if the banks are very hard, perhaps even concrete or wooden staging’s, then its obviously going to be very difficult to get a bankstick in! So a rod pod is essential. If this isn’t a problem then a bankstick and buzz bar set up is fine, if you like to be more mobile and cover more water then a single bankstick setup will be suffice. Again like all the carp fishing tackle we have talked about there is a wide range of rod support to choose from, which all varies in price. The main differences between each product is the quality of material used, with high quality lightweight stainless steel being the best and most expensive, as with anything you do get what you pay for.

All our rod support, buzz bars, banksticks and rod pods can be seen here: Carp Fishing Rod Support.

Now there is obviously a wide range of other tackle items that can be bought to make your Carp fishing easier, more comfortable etc but we’ll leave those for another day…!
