Due to the popularity and positive feedback received from our last Carp Fishing buying guide we thought it was about time we wrote and published an up to date, new version, so here goes…

Carp Fishing Buying Guides - Carp Rods

As carp are natural bottom feeders, baits need to be anchored hard on the lake or river bed, this requires using a lead or feeder to do so and it often, not in all cases needs to be cast quite a distance, this in turn means that a powerful rod is required.

Carp rods start from around £30-£60 with rods like the, Nash H-Gun carp rod and Fox Warrior S Carp Rod, these rods are the ideal starting point for the angler looking to take up Carp fishing. All these rods are very similar in there specification, all manufactured from Carbon with test curves of 2.5lb-3.5lb and all 12ft in length.

The rod we would recommend in this price range is the Fox Warrior S Carp Rod. The Warrior range is probably one of the best-selling Carp rod ranges of all time and the new S model, although set at an entry level price, most certainly does not have an entry level look or feel and infact the S range of Warriors are the slimmest and lightest yet. They feature a progressive through action, are manufactured from low resin carbons and finished with SLIK guides, DPS reel seat, laser etched logo and gun smoke butt cap. All these things combined means this rod not only feels the part but also looks the part! Out of the three test curves available a good starting point would be the 2.75lb test curve, this will cast leads and feeders to 3oz in weight, handle reel lines between 8-15lb and when used with good balanced tackle, send a bait to around a 100 yards. It’s the ideal starting point for all budding Carp anglers and definitely gets the Angling Direct thumbs up!

If you have already served your carp fishing apprenticeship and you are looking to upgrade your rods then perhaps take a look Chub Outkast Plus, Daiwa Theory, ESP Paragon Plus, or the Sonik SK3 XTR Carp rods. All these rods are in the £70-£100 price bracket and offer that little bit more quality than the 2 rods mentioned previously.

Now with slightly more choice available, than what was on offer with the starter price rods the selection process takes a little more thought. The length and test curve should be chosen based on the venues you are Carp fishing. If your fishing consists of smaller venues where the majority of your fishing is done in the margins and within distances of 40-60 yards then a 12ft 2.5lb – 2.75lb model would be fine. If you are fishing larger waters and casting distances of 70-100+ yards then a test curve of 3lb – 3.5lb would perhaps be more suitable. It may also be worth looking at a 13ft model.

The range of rods which offer these choices at competitive prices are the Sonik SK3 XTR carp rods, with unrivalled balance, power and performance all for under £100. There Matt-grey carbon blanks have a parabolic action which loads progressively to the tip with 10% extra power in the butt section.

They are real all-rounder’s which are equally as comfortable casting long distances with loaded PVA bags as they are being used at short range for 'in the margin' approaches. They feature double leg SiC guides for extra performance, strength & durability, a custom Sonik 18mm DPS reel seat - fits all big pit reels and a 'Line-friendly' custom Sonik line clip.

Upgraded cosmetics for 2014 include the choice of a cork or abbreviated handle and new sizes, including 12ft 3.25lb and 3.5lb and 50mm options, further their appeal.

An excellent feature which is not available on some of the other models mentioned above is that these rods are available with a life time guarantee, RAPIDEX Lifetime Rod Replacement Service, with starts from only £15 per section.

Finally we come to the carp rods at the high end of the market, rods for the hardcore carp fisherman who wants to go that little bit further in pursuit of his catch. These are rods over the £150 mark, and are packed full of features and are produced from the highest quality materials available. Rods that fit these specifications are the famous and best selling Daiwa ranges, which include the Longbow DF, Infinity DF and the Basia DF. It may seem strange to concentrate on three models from the same supplier, but when it comes to producing quality Carp rods, Daiwa certainly know the time of day.

Firstly looking at the Daiwa Longbow DF carp rods, with a slim and sleek profile they offer a highly desirable appearance. Carrying the now characteristic toned down look, featuring a Fuji DPS reel seat, profiled NS shrink tube handle, metal butt cap and 50mm trim rings, the Longbow DF’s are designed to produce the goods.

Starting at 2.75lb this popular test curve will hit 120yds (plus in some hands) and thanks to the slim blank will load sweetly along its length with plenty of power down deep. Stepping up in test curve are the meatier 3.0lb and 3.5lb models. Hitting bigger distances and putting out heavier loads these will undoubtedly suit the more common styles of today's carp scene with the 3.5lb model reach 140 yards, accurately.

The second range we mentioned are the next step up from the Longbow’s and they are the Infinity DF’s. Based on Daiwa previously tried and trusted Magnum Taper profile, used for many years by top European carp anglers, they were then given to Danny Fairbrass who had the freedom to design his own specification and finish.

The result is a highly distinctive but subtle looking Carp rod, which features a low glare silk matt finish and selected medium profile, high diameter SiC guides. With a butt guide of 50mm and following intermediates of 38mm and 32mm designed to funnel the line travel towards the tip, a set which is preferred by all big hitters.

The handle combination also delivers Danny’s own unique. Starting with a Fuji reel seat and stainless steel trim rings the handle maintains an elegant feel thanks to the profiled NS grip that continues to the butt. Flared at the end for better gripping this stylized treatment is then finished off with a stainless steel butt cap.

These rods feature a taper fast action blank and are available in five different models, with test curves ranging from 2.75lb to 3.75lb and in lengths of either 12ft or 13ft.

Last but not least and the third Daiwa models we mentioned are the Daiwa Basia DF’s, now these really are the Rolls Royce of the Carp fishing world and really push the boundaries of rod design!

For many years, the Magnum Taper profile (used in the Infinity DF’s) has remained untouched by any other carp rod manufacturer. The balance, tip speed and versatility, even in the high test curves remain unsurpassed.

However for Daiwa this benchmark of ‘the best’ was not high enough so back to the drawing board they went and with the combined desire and drive of the design team and Korda’s Danny Fairbrass a breakthrough was never far away.

By combining a core of high modulus low resin fibre armoured with outer layers of Bias carbon they have been able to reduce the diameter of the MT performance. Importantly this harmony of materials harnesses more potential energy that when released applies more power to the cast. The added benefit of the Bias is a higher torque resistance contributing to better straight line accuracy and a crisper recovery.

Furnished to the same Custom standard as other DF’s each model features 50mm butt guides, a profiled NS grip handle and a silk low glare matt finish.

It may all sound a little bit technical and the price will probably put the majority off, but these rods are really something to behold and a true example of modern day engineering. They are available in seven different models, with test curves ranging from 2.75lb to 3.75lb and in lengths of either 12ft or 13ft.

If you wanted to look at high-end Carp rods from different manufacturers (perhaps the Daiwa’s don’t quite do it for you) then other suppliers worth a mention, include Harrison and there excellent Torrix range, Greys and there famous Isoflex and AirCurve ranges and finally Fox and there Horizon models. All these warrant close consideration when choosing the correct Carp rod and all of them are also leading brands in this area.
