Targets For The Year Ahead - Darryn Stolworthy

This spring I'll be mainly targeting tench! The opening three weeks of the season on my fishery hasn't exactly gone to plan but I’m saving my holiday for later on in May and June, when it really can kick off! At the moment, I'm being restricted to overnight sessions between work and, as you might expect, the fishing hasn't kicked of yet. Usually, I pick up the odd fish or two during the night in most night sessions this time of the year but, in the first 10 nighters I've done, only twice have I been woken up. This is both a blessing and a curse – it’s a shame that I’m not seeing the fish I had hoped for more regularly but it’s great sometimes when I've got work the next day!

Of the two fish which did wake me, one was particularly appreciated! It was a large male of 8lbs 7oz – can’t say fairer than that! The lake I'm fishing I've been on for a few years now and it has a habit of throwing up large male tench, over 11lb being the biggest I've heard of. I'd be over the moon if something like that came along this season!

In between the tench fishing, once it warms up a bit, I'm planning an effort on increasing my eel best. This should keep me going throughout the summer and it will please the population of mozzies, too, because they just love me! After the eels, I've got some barbel fishing sorted out. This should keep me occupied through the autumn before the winter chub come along. I've got a couple more tickets this season and hopefully they'll come up with a fish or two, too! I may even give float fishing another go – you’ll know from my last blog that it isn’t my favourite (or most successful) method but I’m determined to get used to it.

I haven't been this enthusiastic about my fishing for many years, so, whatever happens, I’ll be enjoying it and keeping you updated - whether I'm hauling or blanking! Tight lines.
