Wednesday Review... Ridgemonkey RM-Tec Mono

Those clever little monkeys have done it again! The masterminds behind products such as the Bivvy Lite Duo IR and the Deep Fill Sandwich Toaster which are now almost a staple part of every carp angler’s armoury on the bank, this time RidgeMonkey have branched out and released RM-Tec monofilament!

RM-Tec is a fast sinking, low stretch, super supple, ultra strong and abrasion resistant monofilament that is perfect for fishing in all situations. From casting 100+ yards into snag free open water to fishing up against the thickest of cover and snags, there’s a line in the range that can do it all.

RM-Tec Mono has certainly not let the RidgeMonkey side down and is a hugely popular choice of mainline rivalling all other mainlines on the market currently. So what’s all the fuss about? Ever keen to investigate and test products myself I headed to Clearwater Fishery, Carnforth’s Kellet Lake for a day session armed with freshly spooled 12lb Green RM-Tec.

I was hugely impressed with the performance of RM-Tec. Fishing at around 50 yards in crystal clear water with weedbeds (containing zebra mussels) and boulders present it certainly was a good test for RidgeMonkeys claims about RM-Tec.

The line sank brilliantly and instantly hugged the contours of the lakebed meaning that I was confident fish wouldn’t be hitting my line mid water and spooking from my rig. The low viz green colour meant that even in the tap water clear water of Kellet Lake it was virtually invisible.

I managed to help myself to six fish in a matter of hours and with fish weeding me up and running over boulders the RM-Tec held strong and all fish graced my net. I was impressed with the strength and abrasion resistant especially as I did have to clamp down on a number of fish as they headed for snags. I was used both a grinner and palomar knots and found them both to be perfect with no signs of knot strength weakness.

The low stretch property of RM-Tec was the stand out feature for me. The reduced stretch mean I had a much better feel through the rod when the lead touched down. This mean that I was able to interoperate the lakebed I was fishing over better and all bites came to the hardest of “donks” on my lead.

Overall RM-Tec is a very versatile mono that does exactly what RidgeMonkey says it does. At £18.99 for 1200meters it also offers exceptional value for money. If you are thinking of changing mainline have a look at RM-Tec.
