Bag The Tackle You Want At Angling Direct

Anglers tend to be very concerned about the wider environment; a healthy, thriving, pollution-free environment means more fish, fish that are in better condition, and able to grow to larger sizes, with plenty of energy, strength, and appetite, all of which means better fishing. For anglers, looking after the environment is as natural as breathing, because it ensures we can get the angling action we want, and come back from engaging sessions with plenty of stories that are well worth telling.

One of the biggest environmental stories at the moment is, of course, plastic pollution. While the world at large is focused on ocean plastics, this is also a problem in rivers, and river-fed lakes. As anglers, we can't simply shrug it off, believing that, if we're not involved in sea angling, it's not really an issue for us. It's an issue for every angler, whatever the discipline, and, as such, it's an issue for angling retailers, too.

At Angling Direct, we want to be a respected leader in every aspect of angling retail, including environmental awareness, which is why we're looking at other choices when we place our next order for the carrier bags we have in store. We appreciate that strong, durable, leak and tear-proof bags are pretty much essential when you're going tackle shopping – it's not really practical to carry a brand new set of Basias in a jacket pocket, for example, or simply plop a month's worth of frozen bait directly down on the back seat of your car. For many of the products we sell, a bag is necessary – but it certainly doesn't have to be plastic, and, as the UK's leading angling retailer, we're even willing to spend money to ensure that it's not.

Cost/Benefit

It's a simple, unavoidable fact that sustainable carrier bags cost more than their plastic counterparts. We don't know why, we just know that they do. We also know, however, that people are increasingly concerned with what business in general, and the retail sector in particular are doing to reduce plastic waste, and are looking to spend their money with environmentally and socially responsible companies. Obviously, we want Angling Direct to be a company that anglers want to shop with, and are happy to recommend to others, which makes switching to sustainable carrier bags an obvious decision for us going forward.

Changing the bags we provide isn't the only step we're taking to reducing our impact as a company, and angling's impact as a sport and leisure pursuit, on the environment; when you go into any of our nationwide network of stores, you'll find a convenient bin, clearly marked, into which you can place your old fishing line, both braid and mono. This is a simple step that our reach and position allowed us to take in supporting a grass roots initiative, the Anglers' National Line Recycling Scheme, or ANLRS, which works to prevent fishing line ending up in landfill. There's no cost to you, and, as we already have regular van runs between our stores, there's no additional air pollution involved in us collecting the bins, once they're full of line that's ready to be repurposed, and forwarding it on.

A Final Point

At Angling Direct, we appreciate that many of you don't simply throw out your plastic carrier bags; you use them, over and over again, for carrying bait, wrapping your packed lunch, transporting sea or game fish that you've caught for the table, if that's your preference, and keeping wet clothes from soaking the rest of your tackle. If you've been reading this and thinking “that's all very well, but how is a paper bag going to stand up to everything else I use carrier bags for, besides getting my shopping home?”, then why not check out our luggage ranges? We've got everything from carryalls to coolbags, stink bags to game bags, at prices to suit any budget, and all durable enough to last for several years, even if you're out on a regular basis, and need to take a lot of kit with you.
