Big Perch Fishing

For a few years now we've been on the quest for a specimen Perch, a fish of over 2lb has been on the radar for some time and recently we've been out and about trying to achieve this feat.

Now we aren't Perch fishing experts and nor do we claim to be, so it meant speaking to someone who was, someone who knows the waters to fish and how to catch them. That man was good friend and Angling Direct insurance claims handler Andy Hull.

After a few conversations with Andy he tipped us off about a venue where he'd been enjoying some superb Perch fishing action, landing numerous specimen stripeys to nearly 3lb, he also very kindly filled us in on some of the best methods he'd used to catch them.



With our heads brimming with information we soon formed a plan and pencilled in a short session on a Sunday afternoon. With the Perch preferring to feed in low light conditions, we had been told that the last few hours of the day would be the key 'bite time', so with this in mind we arrived at the lake around 3pm and quickly got the rods baited and out on the spots.

The lake was very deep and we'd been told a that a two pronged attack; one rod on a traditional slider float and one rod on standard running ledger, would see us in with a good chance of a fish or two. We were also told that Andy's fish had been falling to a mixture of Worms and Prawns, so by fishing two rods it would enable us to mix it up a little and to see what the fish were preferring on the day.
