Chinook II Charter Fishing Report – February

I'm very pleased to say that the fishing has finally picked up and that the Codling have returned in numbers!

After a rather tough, barren couple of weeks, where a combination of strong winds and big influx of Sprats have really made fishing difficult, I'm pleased to say that things look like they've finally turned a corner, as sport has picked up dramatically.

The Sprats have thinned out and the fish have been on the hunt for other food sources, no longer occupied by just this tiny silver shoal fish, our Lugworm baits have readily been snaffled. There's been very few small, or nuisance fish around either, so if you get a bite it's more than likely been a Codling.

Full, and in prime condition, these Codling have averaged around 3-4lb and have been showing up all over, with both the inshore and offshore marks fishing well.

As well as the Codling there has also been a few Thornbacks around, we had two on Sunday, with the biggest weighing in a few ounces over 13lb. Most of these have moved off into the deeper water, but it won't be long, probably around March time, before they return in numbers.

The shore and pier marks have been quiet, but I guess with the abundance of Sprats, this is too be expected. However in the coming weeks sport should really pick up, as the Spring run of Codling will start to venture closer to the shore.

With a lack of Whiting, Dogfish and other smaller species and an increasing number of Codling it looks like we could certainly be in for some great Spring fishing!
