Dave Coster's How To- Unlock Silvers

Commercial fisheries normally hold a big head of quality silver fish, species like roach, rudd, perch, hybrids and skimmers, which don’t tend to show much on standard tactics. But there is a way to find these fish in big numbers and it’s dead simple because all you need is a pint of casters and a very basic pole rig. You can even catch silvers as a late bonus, if you want to bag up on carp first.

The best type of pole float to use is a light capacity, slim design with a sensitive tip and wire stem. The wire stem is important because it automatically lifts the float up after it lands in the water, helping to highlight on-the-drop bites. Below the float, simply spread out 3 or 4 micro shot, with a light hook length and size 20 fine wire hook. Best starting depth is normally around the 3ft mark.

It can take a bit of time to get silver fish competing for loose fed casters, so it might be worth having a go with your normal big fish rigs first while you feed up a silver fish line. Just keep dinking small amounts of casters out in open water, anywhere within easy pole reach. You will know when the fish have arrived because they start to swirl on top for the feed as each new helping goes in.

Once silver fish get a taste for casters you will be amazed at what can turn up; quality roach are a prime example. These wise old fish don’t tend to get caught on bottom fished baits, associating them with danger. Instead they learn to pick off any food particles they find left behind, up in the water. You can catch these fish anywhere from mid-depth to the surface, even in very deep areas.
