Five Reasons Why Autumn Is Great!

Today we officially welcome the start of autumn and the autumn equinox. After the joys of summer it can be quite a depressing time, the weather becomes cooler and more changeable and the days get shorter and the nights longer. The memories of surface fishing on a warm summer eve, lure fishing on a crystal clear river or firing peeler crab baits into a glass smooth sea, can soon become a distant memory. However, it's not all doom and gloom, as we look at five reasons why the autumn is great!

1.) Perfect Time For A Predator  The autumn months are a prime time to target all predators, whether you are fishing for pike, perch or zander, as these species really come alive at this time of year. You can't beat watching a couple of pike floats bob on the surface on a cold crisp day amongst the early morning mist!

2.) Cod On!   The summer fish, like bass and smoothound may have left, but from now until the end of December the codling are well and truly on the sea angler’s radar. Fire a couple of big lugworm baits into a chocolate coloured sea whilst listening to the therapeutic sound of waves lapping the shingle...

3.) Better Fish Catching Conditions   Ok, so sitting there on the banks on a grey day battling with wind and rain may not be every angler’s cup of tea, but the fish certainly love it! At this time of year take note of a big low pressure, overcast and unsettled conditions, I bet you'll bag a fish or two! Fish into the teeth of any warm wind and I bet you won't come away disappointed!

4.) Fish Feed Up   The fish aren't stupid, they are well in tune with what’s happening with the seasons and they know winter won't be too far away. Like most wild animals the autumn is a chance for them to feed up and pile on the weight ready for their winter slumber. If need be, they can survive on their fat reserves throughout the coldest winter spells, so in the right conditions at this time of year don't be frightened to give them a bit of bait.

5.) Trade Show Time!   It's well known in the angling industry that autumn is time for trade shows; not only is the weather changing, but suppliers catalogues are too! Exciting new products from all the top suppliers are enough to get the fishing juices flowing on even the worst autumn days!
