Due to the popularity and positive feedback received from our last Carp Fishing buying guide we thought it was about time we wrote and published an up to date, new version, so here goes…

Carp Fishing Buying Guides – Bite Alarms Now armed with your rods, reels and lines there are a few other items of tackle that are common place in a carp angler’s armoury. One of these items is the bite alarm. If you’re not familiar with bite alarms, they are exactly what they say on the tin! An alarm which warns you when you have a bite! Designed to enable anglers to fish through the night and for longer periods of time, the bite alarm means that when targeting carp you can switch off somewhat once your traps are set, knowing that you wont miss out on any action. It’s obviously impossible to watch a quivertip or float for 48 hours without sleep!

Bite alarms are available in many different shapes and sizes, with different specifications and features on each one, working on two principles either with a roller wheel or through vibrations they are also in a wide range of price brackets.

If you are starting up in the world of carp fishing and you are looking to purchase a basic bite alarm or something cheap and cheerful that will do the job, then we would recommend you take a look at something like the Fox Micron M+ or MX+ alarms and/or the Nash Siren S5.

First of all the Fox M+ and the MX+ are two of the best selling bite alarms of all, with the classic Fox Micron look, they offer some serious value for money! 5mm LEDs (red on the M and blue on the MX), Piezo speaker, rubber ear inlays, 1 x power out put & 1 x transmitter out put, plus volume control, as well as a brass threaded stud and nylon thread cap, it’s easy to see why they are so popular amongst Carp and Specimen anglers up and down the country. If you like the sound of these alarms your probably wondering what is the difference between the two and why the MX+ £10 more, this is because the MX+ features two sensitivity settings and also a tone options, which the M+ doesn’t.

Note: Another thing that’s worth mentioning is if you like the look of the Fox Micron M+ or MX+ and were looking for 2 or even 3 alarms then make sure you take a look at the M+r and MX+r sets. These are brand new for 2014 and are available in 2-3 rod sets with a wireless receiver.

As mentioned above the Nash Siren S5 is also another super addition to the ‘budget alarm’ category. New for 2014 this alarm this small, but well built, is the tiny brother of the Siren RS1 and is one of this years must have items. Similar to the Fox Micron M+ it features volume control, a red run and latching LED, and a clear roller wheel, it’s also supplied with a hard case.

If you have a slightly bigger budget and you are after something with even more features then we would recommend looking at something like the Delkim EV Plus, now this alarm is twice the price of the one’s mentioned previously, but again as you would expect there are many differences.

Now Delkim are probably one of, if not the biggest most reputable name in the Carp fishing world when it comes to bite alarms! Normally associated with high end, top quality, expensive alarms, they produced this great alarm only a few years ago to widen the affordability of there products. It uses exactly the same technology and build quality as the flagship TXi Plus but with less functionality and frills. The EV Plus is a serious bite alarm used by serious anglers at a seriously affordable price.

Using Delkims very own patented system which uses digital, microprocessor and piezo technology, giving proportional indication of line speed/vibration with no moving parts whatsoever! In other words this alarm uses vibration sensing rather than the traditional roller wheel which is found in cheaper alarms. It features sensitivity, volume and tone controls, 2 LED’s, nitelite and audio outputs and a brass bolt and locking ring. It is also available in 6 different colours and is sold with a 2 Year Warranty! This really is a fantastic alarm for the money and would probably be one of our STAR purchases.

Now if we start talking about the real high end bite alarms, the alarms which are up there with the Daiwa Infinity Rods and Basia reels we would stick with Delkim once again, this time with there flagship and biggest selling model in the Delkim Plus range, the TXI Plus. It continues to be the first choice bite alarm for experienced anglers all over the world, where sensitivity, controllability, versatility and reliability are the main requirements. Used in conjunction with the Rx Plus Pro Mini Receiver it gives the user the most reliable and sophisticated cordless radio system that money can buy, with genuine range and long battery life expectations. With an alarm of this price you would expect a long list of features and it certainly doesn’t disappoint… Vibration sensing, integral FM radio transmitter, with unique individual transmitter codes, anti theft alarm, volume, tone and sensitivity controls, variable LED modes, patented Delkim night marking mode, nitelite output and stainless steel speaker bolt and locking ring. The alarm also comes supplied with a 2 year guarantee, and perfectly fitting hard case.

Sounds good….? Well before you make this choice there is one more alarm to throw in the equation and this is the excellent new Nash Siren R3 Alarm. Setting new standards in bite registration, the R3s Intelligent Sensing microchip technology eliminates false indications, giving you the ultimate insight into what is happening in your swim.

Centered on the change of speed in line movement, Intelligent Sensing means an end to irritating bleeps from wind, undertow, weed, even variable current in flowing waters. The Siren R3 sounds only to alert you to fish activity in a swim. No longer will bobbin creep disturb you in the early hours when conditions change or weed builds up on the line. No longer will there be any doubt or dismissal over unexplained bleeps. Designed to be used with the Siren R3 receiver, which in tests boasted market leading remote performance! Whilst we would never encourage people to take advantage of the R3s 400 meter plus extreme range capability, the strength of radio signal becomes critical when your rods are not in a clear line of sight such as in dugout swims or when surrounded by dense foliage. Whatever the nature of a swim, its surroundings or obstacles that block weaker signals, the R3 will still perform.

Now choosing a bite alarm just became that little bit more difficult!
